Conures

Conures are small parrots that are beautiful but also loud. However, they are divided into two main groups, Aratinga and Phyhurra. Phyhurra conures are not as loud. However they are not as beautiful as the other species. Each conure has unique traits. Conures come from south america.

There are more than 40 species of conures. Only about a dozen of them are kept as pets. Species include:

Black Cap

The black capped conure is about 10 inches long and weighs about 70 grams. They are a pyhurra species and are quiter, so an apartment is fine. They need a cage of at least 24x24x24 inches with 1/2 bar spacing. They are good beginer birds. A closely related green cheek conure is much more common.

Green Cheek Conure

The green cheek conure is about 10 inches long and weighs about 60-80 grams. They are not as loud as aratinga species, so they can live in an apartment. They need a cage of at least 24x24x24 inches with 1/2 inch bar spacing. They are good beginer birds. They are the most common conure and the most common phyhurra species.

Peach Front Conure

The peach front conure is about 10 inches long and weighs about 80-105 grams. They are mainly green with peach feathers on the head, and a black beak. They are part of the Aratinga species which are loud, so a house is more suitable for these birds. They need a cage of at least 24x24x24 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing. They are one of the less popular species.

Half Moon Conure

The half moon conure is about 9.5 inches long (4 and 3/4 inches in body height) and weighs 80-105 grams. The half moon conure looks like the peach fronted conure, but with a horn colored beak instead of a black beak. They are a Aratinga species which are loud, so a house is more suitable for these birds. They need a cage of at least 24x24x24 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing. They are one of the less popular species.

Sun Conure

The sun conure is about 12 inches long (6 inches body height) and weighs 100-140 grams. These species are one of the very loud conures, so a house is a much wiser choice. As juveniles they look more like Jenday Conures. They need a cage of at least 36x36x36 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing. They are the most popular species of aratinga and the second most popular of all conures.

Jenday Conure

The Jenday conure is about 12 inches long and weighs 110-130 grams. This species are one of the loudest conures, so a house is a much wiser choice. They need a cage of at least 36x36x36 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing. They are the second most popular species of aratinga and the third most popular of all the conures.

Nanday Conure

The Nanday conure is about 12 inches long and weighs 115-160 grams. Unlike most conures, he is bright green with red legs and a blue chest. This species is so loud that he can scream 155 decibels! So a house is a much wiser choice than an apartment. They need a cage of at least 36x36x36 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing. They are the third most popular species of aratinga and the forth most popular of all conures.

The Blue Crown conure is about 14 inches long (7 inches in body height) and weighs around 140-190 grams. This is the smartest conure. He is mainly green with blue feathers on top of the beak. This species can be loud, so he is made for a house, not a apartment. They need a cage of at least 36x36x36 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing.

The Gold Capped conure is 12 inches long. He is mainly green with red feathers on top of the beak and chest. This species can be loud, so he is made for a house, not a apartment. They need a cage of at least 36x36x36 inches with 1/2-3/4 inch bar spacing.

Patagonian Conure

These conures are not attached to Aratinga or Pyhurra, instead their genus is "Cyanoliseus". They are about 19 inches long (8.5 inches in body height) and weigh 210-300 grams. Although they pick a favorite person they have loyal, affectionate, and playful. They are loud, and might be the loudest of all the conures. Some have even devolped a vocabulary! Since they are so big a 48x48x48 cage is the minimum cage size bar spacing with 1 inch.
